Sharp publishes an application note on its active triangulation-based depth sensors series GP2Y0D8x. The principle of the sensor is shown on the figure:

It works fine in most of the cases, and allows even a simplistic movement detection. However, in some use cases the distance is determined incorrectly (sensor thinks that the object located at position C):
